Loving the Trench...and Talbots Too!

Tired of recent final sale and lackluster Spring at J. Crew, I've decided to take a diversion to some of my favorite old classics.  I hadn't been in Talbot's in a very long while when on a business trip to Dallas I decided to take a peek.  And at the time, they were launching their very beautiful Spring line.  If you haven't visited, the site has had a nice modern facelift as well which a beautiful representation of all ages/sizes of women.  The item I have been looking for was a trench coat and after three reviews went with the Modern trench coat at Talbots.  And it was on sale at $89.99, practically a steal.  I bought it in ecru which looks fresh and modern as the name defines. It is amazingly comfortable and looks sexy chic.

I also looked at the Land's End Canvas (another fav) with their Heritage trench but at $199 I had to pass.  I loved the detail on this one and am hoping to get it in another season once marked down.

And lastly was my review of the J. Crew Icon trench at $298.  C'mon now, I know J. Crew touts their special fabrics and mills afar, but Japenese cotton?  Is it really that soft?  If you have a review, I would love to hear.  At any rate, I went for the Talbot's classic.

It does pay to look around at the favorites and of recent, J. Crew has not been my immediate "go-to".  I love to find a deep discount for a beautiful piece.  I think I will be returning to Talbot's more often.  They have some wonderful classics and a look/feel I miss from J.Crew quite honestly.  Does anyone else feel J. Crew has lost their way?  Please come back J. Crew.  I miss you.

J Crew Coming to UK Shoppers via Net-a-Porter.com! (And by the way, love more Jenna history!

Special relationship or no special relationship, there are some things we will always need the Americans for. I'm talking about really well-cut chinos that are flattering enough to wear with plimsolls or heels. Linen blazers with sufficient structure to make the grade at work but just enough scrunch to take them into weekend wear. Kids' clothes that have exactly the right mix of nostalgia and sass. These are the days when the pick'n'mix charm of the British fast-fashion high-street stores, brilliant though they are, doesn't cut it, and we are drawn toward Gap and Banana Republic for their easy-on-the-eye, easy-to-wear vanilla appeal.
Getting that American fashion fix is about to become a whole lot easier. J Crew – the jewel in the crown of the American high street – will at last be available to British shoppers onnet-a-porter.com from early May. A 27-year-old brand currently riding high on the back of endorsement by Michelle Obama, who often dresses herself and her daughters in the label, J Crew has become a destination store for British fashion editors – no New York fashion week is complete without a visit. A year ago, I bought a collarless camel wool cropped jacket there. At around $200 it wasn't cheap – but the fabric is still good as new and it has been a staple of my wardrobe ever since, seeming to intuit the onset of the coming era of minimalism even before it had appeared on the Paris catwalks. It is almost boring, yet absolutely perfect: a classic J Crew purchase.
The love-in between Obama and J Crew began in October 2008, when she wore a Pembridge dot pencil skirt, an Italian deco silk tank and a sunshine-yellow cardigan for an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. The choice of J Crew semaphored two important messages. In the week when details of Sarah Palin's $150,000 campaign wardrobe broke, the price tag – around $500 for the whole outfit – scored an instant win without being so bargain-basement as to look like point-scoring. And the solidly all-American image of J Crew was balm to those still twitchy about the not-yet first lady's perceived lack of patriotism.
The Jay Leno outfit went down so well, in fact, that the label became an Obama family staple. On the day of the inauguration, J Crew issued a proud announcement: "Malia featured a deep periwinkle blue coat, while her equally chic sister wore a deep coral dress under her sweet guava coat, vivid orange scarf and glove set, each tied with a velvet ribbon belt around the waist." When the first lady wore a crystal-flecked cardigan for a visit to 10 Downing Street in April, the sweater sold out in all New York stores by 10am East Coast time.
"Michelle Obama is the best thing that ever happened to J Crew," the New York Daily News announced. But even more valuable than the sell-out was the shift in the label's image. When Michelle Obama wore capri pants with plimsolls to tour her vegetable patch, it blew the cobwebs off a label that had seemed a little dusty. As Jenna Lyons, the creative director of J Crew, says: "The thing about preppy is it can be alienating to some people. It's very coastal and it leaves out a lot of Americans who aren't yachting or going to the beach club."

Michelle Obama may be the poster girl for J Crew, but Jenna Lyons is the woman in the director's chair. Over the last two decades, Lyons has worked her way up through the ranks of the company to become creative director. She has taken the colourful, classy-but-upbeat principles of American preppiness and – with a rolled-up trouser hem, a turned-up collar, kooky layering and an unexpected belt – brought them up to date. To the American casualwear basics (cashmere in great colours, crisp shirts) she has added new J Crew classics (vintage-look denim shorts, fantastic costume jewellery).
Lyons, who has become a fashion-industry girlcrush, has kept every copy of Vogue since August 1984 in her apartment, yet cites the New Yorker as her favourite magazine. She never wears flat shoes, but claims to be obsessed with Alexa Chung's tomboyish style. Derek Lam, feted American designer and a contemporary of Lyons at college, says she "brings a fashion editor's eye to an accessible brand".
For the spring collection, this means applying the principles of Céline-esque neutral-toned, narrow-but-boxy minimalism to the J Crew world to produce a slim oatmeal pencil skirt with (very flattering) black side panels. It means dreaming up the perfect chunky diamante and ribbon necklace, the kind you hope to find in vintage stores but never do. It means taking the sexy-military Balmain look and leavening the formula to produce the perfectly fitted-but-relaxed khaki weekend jacket, which also looks great over a cocktail dress. As Lyons told style.com recently: "That little cargo jacket that we would have shown 10 years ago with a polo shirt, we're now showing with a little sequin top and high heels."
Every country has a few fashion labels that occupy a space in the popular culture and seem to hold meaning even to those who don't shop there. Think Marks & Spencer and Burberry for us. J Crew has that kind of visibility in America, and with that comes a certain good-humoured lampooning, not dissimilar to that aimed at the Boden catalogue in the UK. NBC's fashion blog recently asked: "Do you ever live vicariously through the J Crew catalogue? Pretend you wear sweaters with bikinis with your blond children and geeky-hot husband?" The Jezebel bloggers run a page-by-page commentary every time the label sends out a new catalogue.
But the joy, for British shoppers, of bland American fashion – whether it's this season's perfect, washed-out Gap sweatshirt or the J Crew luxe T-shirt – is that it comes wrapped in plain white tissue paper, but gloriously free of baggage. Just the way we want it.
I love the organza dress with the boyfriend fatigue jacket!  More military chic and fem/masculine pairings!  Will we tire of this any time soon?

I Scored at J. Crew! The Tayla Dress...

Sometimes it just feels good to score at J. Crew.  On a quick jaunt over to the B&M at lunch today, was actually just checking out any new Spring sale items and they have added anew.  But what do I stumble across all beautifully black and classic office chic - the Drapey Wool Tayla dress  which is no longer available!  I thought, this could not be true as I waited and waited (one markdown too long!) and poof, it was gone.  This is as J. Crew states, "easy elegance" and the finish is subtle and beautifully tailored.  And, so, so comfortable.  I know we ask ourselves, "How possibly could we buy another black dress", but I couldn't resist as the story goes.  Here is the best part.  So the dress was originally $188 and after couple markdowns, down to $59.99 which was as marked today.  But when the sales person rang it up - C-ACHING! - at $39.99, I could not believe it was true.  Oh J.Crew, I'm still in love with you.  Don't you love a great find and have any found you?

the thread by Nordstrom...your own personal stylist online!

There is nothing greater than great styling and smart advice on a range of topics from beauty, fashion and emerging trends.  If done right, you keep coming back for more.  Of recent, I have loved exploring Nordstrom's site on an area called the thread.  There are a number of topics created by their advisors, stylists, etc. that keep me looking weekly for great advice and beautiful images.

For example, under the fashion Advisor, June Rau Nordtrom's fashion director does a whole fresh look/overview to Chambray which I never would have imagined had so many possiblilites to styling.  It truly is a classic.  June mixes and matches outfits so you can see how it works "at work", "after 5" and "weekends".  It is very clever, kind of a grown up version of Colorforms online.

Check it out.  If anything, makes me feel like I have my own personal stylist right in the convenience of
my own home!

More J. Crew Fall 2010 Collection (Images)

Special thanks to Heather Clawson from Habitually Chic and Everything Fabulous as I was able to pick up some more images from J. Crew's 2010 Fall Collection for Women.  I was not as originally wowed by the initial images that I saw but after seeing some of these images, I have become a bit more intrigued.

I love the use of color with the richness of olive, plums and browns played against lighter hues of blush, gold, celadon.  I do also like the use of mixed media but am wondering perhaps if JC might be going a bit overboard with sequins, feathers, wools, gingham print, etc.  Some of these images border high fashion and less classic J. Crew.  I love looking at the photos but am not sure how many of these pieces I could see myself wearing.
From previous posts, have noted that I am still enjoying utilitarian chic and since I have bought a few pieces, I will carry them over.  I was glad to see JC is previewing them as well for Fall.  I love masculine mixed with fem and the color palette is definitely beautiful.

Do you think it is too early to get excited about Fall and do you love any of the pieces from the collection?

The Miche Bag (One Bag, Endless Possibilities)...I'm in Love!

I am in love with the Miche Bag!  I actually stumbled across this bag at a Hallmark store of all places only to find out that word is spreading fast on this bag with interchangeable magnetic shells.  It is a simple concept and wish I had come up with it.  You buy the Miche Bag base (large or small) and then add the Miche Bag shell to compliment.  The base of the bag has pockets for everything and I mean everything.  I felt like I struck gold with the perfect travel bag which is stylishly chic!  There are many styles with faux leather and some with prints.  The shells are reasonably priced (at or around $44) and the store rep told me a new one comes out each month (ok, I'm hooked).  The magnets also Do Not destroy credit cards, phones, hotel cards or go off in the airport.  Finally!!

There is also a Miche Bag Blog so you can keep up with their latest support efforts and news.  As example, if you buy the "Hope" shell as example you know you are helping because a portion of every purchase goes toward cancer research.

I say, fabulous job Michelle Romero for your wonderful concept that came to life!!  I love and ladies, you must check it out...

Here is the amazing story and video of the designer from www.abc7chicago.com:

Have you ever spilled something on your favorite handbag and were forced to replace the "perfect" purse? It happened to Michelle Romero, a 29-year old Utah mother of two. She turned her frustration into an international business. Michelle thought, "What if you could just replace the outside of a purse without taking everything out of your bag?" So, using the stained bag with some glue and scrap fabric, she created a rough prototype of a purse with interchangeable covers. Michelle enlisted the help of a friend and Annette Cavaness. Together they started the process of building a business that became Miche Bag."

Utilitarian Gone Wild

I just cannot help myself.  I am typically not overly anxious to follow a trend, but I have been all over the utility, militaryn chic, campy and fatique looking garments.  Many of the major designers have showcased this look and J. Crew, Land's End Canvas and my recent Victoria's Secret are no exceptions.  In the last month I have purchased JC's Relaxed boyfriend military jacket, Land's End canvas cargo pants which I previously reviewed and Victoria's Secret Drawstring jacket in spring moss ($58) which has a very feminine feel.  I lucked out with the JC boyfriend jacket as it is sold out, but stumbled upon it at the B&M yesterday marked down to $59.99.  I love the style, very well-made and love how the waist can be cinched for different looks.  VS also has a variety of utilitarian looks, but I love the light weight of the drawstring jacket and the cinched sleeves.  Both jackets can be transitional pieces.  Hopefully I will cut myself off, but really love pairing these somewhat masculine looks with ultra-fem blouses or tees.  Do you like this trend or are you tired of it already?!

More Press...NYMag.com "J.Crew Creative Director Jenna Lyons Loves Phoebe Philo’s Work at Celine, Shuns the Eighties Revival"

J.Crew, fall 2010.

From NY Mag.com
At J.Crew's fall 2010 presentation at Milk Studios last night, models wore rugged tweeds, textured tights, and outerwear with Mongolian lamb accents. J.Crew creative director Jenna Lyons described the look as “Edie Beale goes to Girl Scout camp.” The saucer-sized jewelry and homemade headpieces would definitely be at home in Grey Gardens, and Lyons suggested “slapping brooches all over everything” to achieve this eccentric, layered look
For spring, which finally seems to be upon us, Lyons likes minimal looks. “I can’t really wear them, but I love all the paler creams,” she gushed. “What Pheobe Philo is doing for Celine is so beautiful. It’s all about the most expensive fabric in the world, the most beautiful tailoring, the biggest bank accounts, and the most beautiful bodies. It’s not going to happen. Those things aren’t working for me.” However, she's not a fan of the eighties revival, and didn’t escape that decade unscathed herself. “I was committing fashion crime after fashion crime all day long. I had asymmetrical hair. It was bad, bad, bad, bad, bad.”
Lyons recently said she would love to do a designer collaboration with Christian Louboutin for footwear. Last night she came up with a slew of designers she'd like to work with. "Alber Ebaz, Phillip Lim, Riccardo Tisci," she said. "YSL — I’m dying. I would love to work with Stefano [Pilati]. I’m a huge fashion freak."
As for celebrity design collaborations? “I would have to say Cate Blanchett. I love her. She’s not a clone. If everyone is wearing cupcake dresses she’s not wearing a cupcake dress, she’s wearing something totally different. Or Maggie Gyllenhaal, I love Maggie Gyllenhaal. She looked incredible at the Oscars in that Dries little column dress.”

Off to Ann Taylor 40% Off Entire Purchase! 3 Days Only

So I only ended up getting a couple items from J. Crew's recent 30% off and had really hoped that more handbags would have been available under this sale.  Actually, I think my online shopping fingers were likely not quick enough, so I lost out a couple times!  With that, Ann Taylor has been a favorite of mine again.  They have timeless pieces for my wardrobe and the Spring 2010 line is gorgeous.  So, to my great surprise they posted my favorite sale (40% off and free shipping on $150+).  Items are going fast, but I managed to pick up a couple staple pieces including the Cowl Neck Draped Dress in dark teal.  I love the way their garments fit.  They are romantic and classic and have really found that so many of the items translate well to the office.  So check it out and please share any of your favorite items!  I have bought some beautiful blouses over the last couple months there so am glad I have a bit of a diversion from J. Crew, especially when I can't get my hands on some of the sale items I want!
